What Is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) lets you borrow books, DVDs, audiobooks, journal articles, and other library materials not available in our collection. Through partnerships with networks like WorldCat and Wiscat, we source items from libraries nationwide and bring them to La Crosse Public Library for you.
Who Can Use This Service?
Eligible patrons: Anyone with a valid La Crosse Public Library card in good standing (no fines or overdue items).
Not eligible: Temporary cardholders or those with restricted accounts.
Need a card? Visit any of our branches in La Crosse, Bangor, Campbell, Holmen, or Onalaska to sign up for free.
What Can You Request?
You can borrow a variety of materials, including:
Books (including textbooks, if available)
Audiobooks
DVDs
Journal articles
Microfilm
Other resources (subject to availability)
Note: Some items, like new releases or rare materials, may not be available due to lending library policies.
How to Place an ILL Request
Check our catalog: Search the La Crosse Public Library catalog at [insert library website URL] to ensure the item isn’t available locally.
Submit a request:
Log in to your library account and use WorldCat or Wiscat to request the item.
Need help? Call (608) 789-7100, email ill@lacrosselibrary.org, or visit the Reference Desk.
Receive your item: We’ll notify you when your item arrives (usually within 1–2 weeks). Pick it up at the library and return it by the due date.
Costs and Policies
Cost: Most ILL requests are free, but some lending libraries may charge a fee. We’ll inform you of any costs before proceeding.
Limits: Up to five active requests per patron.
Loan period: Typically 2–4 weeks, set by the lending library. Renewals may be allowed at their discretion.
Responsibility: Return items on time to avoid fines or loss of ILL privileges. You’re responsible for any damage or loss fees.
Returning Materials
Return all ILL items to La Crosse Public Library by the due date. Late returns or failure to return materials may result in fines or suspension of privileges.
